Johan van der Linden studeerde in 1983 af voor Uitvoerend Musicus Saxofoon bij Ed Boogaard aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. Volgde masterclasses bij o.a. Iwan Roth, Daniel Defayet, Frederik Hemke, Francois Daneels. Van 1982 tot 2013 was hij primarius van het wereldberoemde Aurelia Saxofoonkwartet. Voor dit kwartet schreef hij talloze arrangementen en ontving hij vele onderscheidingen. In 1988 won het Aurelia Saxofoonkwartet de ‘Edison Klassiek’, een prestigieuze prijs voor de beste cd-opname van dat jaar.. Het Aurelia heeft 9 cds op zijn naam staan en vele buitenlandse tournees naar o.a. Ierland, Duitsland, Canada, Indonesië, Amerika en Japan. In 2013 heeft Johan na 31 vruchtbare jaren het kwartet verlaten. Van 1982 t/m 1990 was Johan van der Linden aangesteld als Saxofonist van de Koninklijke Militaire Kapel in Den Haag.

Johan heeft gewerkt op drie conservatoria in Nederland.  Verder als werkzaam geweest als freelance saxofonist bij: Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest, Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Residentie Orkest, Radio Philharmonisch Orkest.

Johan is kernlid van het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble.

Naast de drukke speel- en lespraktijk en masterclasses over de hele wereld houdt Van der Linden zich ook bezig met het ontwikkelen van nieuw repertoire bij de uitgevers, Molenaar Edition, Donemus, Tierolff muziekcentrale en G.M.F.

Met de pianist Henry Kelder heeft hij een duo dat zich richt op speciaal voor het duo geschreven nieuwe muziek 

ondergebracht bij Matching Arts.  

Samen met zijn vrouw Elske te Lindert vormt hij het duo 

‘Flor de Tilo’.

Johan was Splendoriaan van het eerste uur.

The "Lind’n Kelder" duo is an new initiative. This duo with pianist Henry Kelder is specialized in new music for saxophone and piano. In this perspective they organized a concourse for composers, IACC. This duo has a big repertoire with music specially written for them.

Johan plays exclusive on Le Monde saxophones, endorser for Rousseau mouthpieces Silverstein Ligatures and D’Addario Reeds.

With his wife Elske te Lindert he has a duo, Flor de Tilo. He is a member of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. As a freelance musician he works frequently with Dutch Orchestra's, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. As a soloist he premiered a lot of saxophone concerto’s.

From 1982 till 1990 he was a member of the Royal Military Band(KMK) in The Hague.

Together with his colleges of the Aurelia he wrote a method for saxophone. He is a freelance soloist and playing in all kind chamber music ensembles.

Johan is composer and arranger.
